Hip flexors always feel tight? Here’s why stretching isn’t enough…
One of the most common complaints I hear is:
“My hip flexors are always tight.”
In reality, they often aren’t just tight—they’re weak, overloaded or lacking control.
If you only stretch them, you might get temporary relief, but unless you improve their strength and capacity, the tightness usually comes back.
These are three of my go-to progressions:
1️⃣ Mountain Climber Hip Flexion Isometric
Builds tolerance and teaches the hip flexors to stabilise the pelvis.
2️⃣ Hip Flexor Plank with Shoulder Taps
Challenges hip flexor endurance while integrating core stability and anti-rotation control.
3️⃣ Eccentric Single-Leg Hip Flexor Sit-Up
Develops strength through the lengthening phase, helping the hip flexors absorb force and cope with higher-demand activities like running, kicking and sprinting.
These exercises aren’t suitable for everyone and should always be prescribed based on your assessment and stage of rehabilitation.
Combined with the right mobility work, they’re a far more effective long-term solution than stretching alone.
Don’t just create movement… own it.
Assess. Treat. Strengthen. Perform.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of having my nephew Freddie spend the week with me on work experience.
At just 15 years old, he’s at that stage where he’s starting to think about what the future might look like.
If I’m honest, I don’t envy that decision. Choosing a career at that age can feel like a huge responsibility, especially when you’re expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life.
Having him with me for the week reminded me just how fortunate I am to have found something I’m genuinely passionate about - and it did take a few years to find it!
When I was younger, football was my escape. It was where I could express myself, switch off from everything else and just feel free.
Looking back now, I realise I get exactly the same feeling in my career. Whether it’s working through a complex injury, explaining the rehabilitation process to a client, or seeing someone achieve something they didn’t think was possible, it’s incredibly rewarding. Every day is different, every person is different, and I genuinely love what I do.
Whether Freddie chooses this profession or something completely different, my biggest hope is that he finds something that gives him that same feeling.
Because when you’re passionate about what you do, work never really feels like work - Success is great, but enjoying what you do every day is priceless!

Rehab doesn’t stop when the pain goes away.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is stopping rehabilitation once symptoms improve.
Pain is only one piece of the puzzle.
The next step is teaching the body to move and transfer force efficiently again.
That’s where sling training comes in.
Instead of isolating muscles, we train the body as an integrated system.
The exercises above challenge the:
✅ Posterior Oblique Sling – linking the glute, thoracolumbar fascia and opposite lat to improve force transfer and pelvic stability.
✅ Anterior Oblique Sling – connecting the adductors, obliques and opposite hip to control rotation and create stability through walking, running and changing direction.
✅ Lateral Sling – improving single-leg stability and reducing unnecessary movement through the pelvis and trunk.
Whether you’re recovering from back pain, SIJ pain, hip pain or returning to sport, these systems need to work together—not in isolation.
Manual therapy creates the opportunity for better movement.
Strength training reinforces it.
That’s how we help people move better, perform better and stay out of pain.
Assess. Treat. Integrate. Perform.

Restoring movement, not just treating pain!
This client presented with an anterior pelvic tilt, increasing compression through the right sacroiliac joint (SIJ) and contributing to ongoing discomfort.
Today’s session focused on:
✔️ Restoring pelvic position
✔️ Improving lumbopelvic control
✔️ Reducing excessive tone through overactive tissues
✔️ Reintegrating balanced movement patterns
Pain is often a symptom of how the body is moving—not just where it hurts. By addressing the underlying biomechanics, we can reduce stress on the SIJ and build more resilient movement.
Assess. Correct. Strengthen. Perform.
